193 Lakewood Lane

This stunning Lake Superior property is only 4 miles from downtown Marquette but has the privacy and feeling of a remote Northwoods camp. The lot is 2.2 acres with a driveway that winds 300 feet through a forest of mature red pine and undulating ancient beach ridges. Eight different beach ridges can be easily distinguished on the property dating to approx 5,000 BCE. One especially massive white pine on the property is 300 - 400 years old.

9A setting like this provides privacy and the location close to town offers convenience. The woods hides the house from the road, and out front the Lake Superior dunes and wide, magnificent beach invite hiking or jogging easterly or westerly, towards sunrise or sunset. After dark the lights of Marquette sparkle across the bay and in the evening by a campfire the soft, rhythmic wash of the water along the shore is a sound like no other.

Dune grass and sweeping sand beaches like these are reminiscent of the great West Michigan sand beaches or those on North Carolina's Atlantic shore. What a fine place this is to raise a family!

The house is located in an open, sunny clearing in the center of the lot and overlooks a small pond or "bayou" that attracts waterfowl and other wildlife and is a great place to ice skate in the winter. From the pond you can wander along a path that meanders through spruce, birch and old growth white pine before it brings you to the property's large sand dunes and the sandy shore of Lake Superior.

14The property is especially kid-friendly and includes; turtles, frogs, sledding, X-C skiing, campfire rings, sauna, swimming and more. Even one hundred feet from shore Lake Superior is only a few feet deep and has a 100% sand bottom so kids can enjoy swimming without fear of sharp rocks or sudden drop offs.

The extreme south end of the property adjoins a state recreation trail for non-motorized summer use and winter snowmobile use. Pick blueberries, blackberries and raspberries on the property.

The house was originally built in 1945 and a large addition was put on in 1998. It has 2,013 square feet of finished living space, three bedrooms, one bath, and a traditional fieldstone and brick fireplace in the living room. Heating is natural gas forced air. There is a 1,875 SF basement and attic storage, both unfinished, and a separate workshop with electricity and a wood fired sauna, which was built in 2009.

Marquette has been much in the news one of "30 Most Livable Communities in the nation", and one of the most active small arts communities. It's the largest city in the Upper Peninsula with Division I sports (hockey), restaurants that will surprise you, a first class regional hospital and city services including scheduled jet service at the regional airport.

7With the Huron Mountains to the north and west, Munising's Pictured Rocks National Park, Grand Island and Hiawatha National Forest to the east, and a progressive and beautiful downtown Marquette is a wonderful place to live.

Marquette Bay offers great boating water, some of the safest on Lake Superior because it is sheltered from the prevailing winds. If you are a sailor there are regular races so join right in. The City and County maintain an amazing number of Lake Superior sand beaches and park areas up the coast for swimming and hiking. The mountain bike trails in this area are second to none and Bike Magazine picked Marquette as one of the five best places for a mountain biker to live in the nation.

3No other home is visible from most of the property, but the surrounding Lakewood Lane area is one of the best and most popular residential areas in the city. While all of Lakewood Lane shares this great Lake Superior beach, few lots are as deep and private as this one, and its location near the westerly end puts it closer to Marquette than most. You should see it.
