Main House

Everything you might want…. The home is lovely, perfectly sized, immaculate. The acreage is wooded but not so wooded that you won’t enjoy the lake’s moods. The guest house is perfect and new. The lakes are nice sized – not intimidating, still certainly large enough to use anyway you like.

The one-level main house has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths, an anchoring stone fireplace and a lovely feeling – like home. The timbers above balance the fireplace (with high efficiency woodstove insert) and contrast nicely with the red pines outside. It’s not a log cabin, so they do not result in that “too heavy” feeling – it’s all balanced.

The guest house has two bedrooms and one bath and living, dining and kitchen spaces. And beautiful eyebrow cut-outs to bring it all together.

Two garages (a three-car and a one-car plus workshop) keep everything neat and tidy. This home is off-grid, but the propane (2 1,000-gallon tanks), generators (one 10kw and the other 8.5kw) and solar supplement (1,000 w) are so nicely done you won’t notice except when you realize you haven’t paid an electric bill in months!

All four of the Fortune Lakes connect by navigable channels. The two you will become intimate with are removed from the more heavily used part of the lakes, making them peaceful and very private. But, you can boat to the busier portion if you’re in the mood for that.

Within 15 minutes, you can be in Crystal Falls buying groceries and running errands. It takes about 1.5 hours to get to the airport in Marquette, and even less to the airport in Iron Mountain. We’ve been there on hot summer days and not seen a single soul. (Insert smile here.) Fortune Lake #4 (the one you’ll see from the screen porch) dips to 43’; Fortune Lake #3 with a dock down a lovely boardwalk is even deeper at 55’.

We did see the eagle’s nest and otter scat as well as a glimpse of an otter. The loons called, constituting the only noise other than wind in the pines and an occasional ruffle of waves. And there are raspberries to pick.
