Hancock has a strong Finnish heritage and sense of community. It is connected to Houghton by the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. Hancock has a lively downtown with several distinct restaurant options and a gorgeous view across the Keweenaw Waterway towards Houghton. In addition to its downtown area, which features the region’s only coop, Hancock borders the small village of Ripley which is home to the area’s ski hill, Mt. Ripley. Aside from the downhill ski opportunities, Hancock also has excellent cross-country skiing, with multiple access points to the Massto Hiihto, meaning “cross-country ski” in Finnish, within the area. These same trails are open for mountain biking and hiking in the summer. And, the renowned Swedetown trails, located in Calumet, are only a 20 min drive north. Other winter activities in the area include snowmobiling and skating.
